what are the characteristics of membrane separation technology?

Membrane separation technology has the following characteristics compared with traditional separation technologies such as distillation, adsorption and extraction.

(1) membrane separation is an efficient separation process. For example, gravity-based separation techniques have a minimum limit of micron (micron) particles, and membrane separation allows the separation of materials of nanometer size (nm).

(2) the energy consumption of membrane separation process is relatively low. Most membrane separation processes do not change the "phase" and the latent heat of the "phase" change is very large, so the energy consumption is low. Taking seawater desalination as an example, membrane technology reverse osmosis is less energy consuming than other separation methods.

(3) the working temperature of most membrane separation processes is close to that at room temperature. Therefore, it is especially suitable for the treatment of heat sensitive substances. For example, water treated by membrane separation can be carried out at room temperature or lower temperature to ensure that local overheating does not occur, greatly improving the safety of drug use.

(4) Membrane separation equipment itself has no moving parts, the working temperature is near room temperature, so the maintenance workload is reduced, easy to operate, easy to start and stop.

(5) The scale and capacity of membrane separation process can be changed in a large range, but its efficiency, unit price of equipment, operating costs and so on have little change.

(6) membrane separation, due to its high separation efficiency, is usually relatively small in volume and occupies less space.

(7) Membrane separation is different from water clarification and desalination process, does not need to consume a large number of coagulants and acid, alkali and other chemical drugs, so it does not cause harm to the environment.
